When we accidentally touch a hot object, we quickly and involuntarily pull our hand away, which we call a “reflex”. Our spinal cord, which is a part of our nervous system, controls our reflex behaviors and we can understand how important it is when we examine the vertebral bones that surround our spinal cord, namely our spine. After observing how our spinal cord is protected by making a spine model with our 6th grade students, we calculated our average reflex time by performing a reflex test.
